Eagle Eye Contests - are truly, one of
the greatest teaching, and Learning tools, available to the
up and coming Farrier. And this is how it works; A specimen
foot is prepared for the participant. Where as the
participant is not allowed to see the foot until the
appropriate moment. First looking at the ground surface of
the foot, it is trimmed to a standard, taught in most north
American, and British schools. Second the perimeter of the
foot is dressed to follow the white line, leaving an equal
amount of hoof wall around the perimeter, and usually left
at that. Where as, the hoof is not normally dressed to that
perimeter blueprint line, for the competition, as it is
unnecessary work, and when viewing the foot from the ground
surface is not seen.
At the appropriate time each student is called over, to view
the ground surface of the foot, for ten seconds, and ten
seconds only. During this time the student must ascertain,
the width, length (toe to heel), length (perimeter, from
left heel through the toe to the right heel. Then is given
one half hour to build the shoe to fit the foot. And of
course, the best fit WINS. One of the first competitions I
was involved in, none of the shoes were even close, and so a
stalemate was called.
Below is an example of my first win.
